Synopsis. A number of modern techniques suitable for the design of crushing and grinding circuits are described. The methods are based on extensive use of mathematical models of crushers, mills and classifiers and are seen as alternatives to conventional comminution design methods based on Work Indexcalculations.
During the mechanical comminution, impact energy is transferred to the powders from the grinding balls. The critical speed of the planetary ball mill is also an important parameter, as above this speed the balls are pinned to the inner walls of the milling vials due to centrifugal forces, and so do not exert any impact force on the metal powders.
The process of comminution is the crushing and grinding of a material / ore to reduce it to smaller or finer particles. The comminution process reduces particle sizes by breaking, crushing, or grinding of ore, rock, coal, or other materials. The process is most often used in the field of mining and / or mineral processing, where mineral ore is broken down into small particles, by …

A comminution model is developed for ball mills using the principles of perfect mixing. T-lines are developed from data arising from single particle breakage tests using a laser monitored, twin pendulum breakage device. A t 1.4 parameter is developed that produces a family t-lines which can be modeled using linear equations.

The optimization of comminution circuits has traditionally relied on well-accepted comminution laws and ore hardness and grindability indices for ball/rod mills [9,10] and SAG mills [11,12,13].These comminution models are routinely used for optimized grinding circuit design, using averages or ranges of ore hardness tests of the mineral deposits to be extracted.
@article{osti_276684, title = {Efficiency of stirred ball mills}, author = {Yan, D S and Dunne, R C and Freeman, M E}, abstractNote = {Stirred mills were first introduced in the 1950`s as an alternative to ball mills in a regrind application. Since then they have been used to grind a range of materials from limestone to coal to sulfide concentrates.
the mill is used primarily to lift the load (medium and charge). Additional power is required to keep the mill rotating. 8.1.3 Power drawn by ball, semi-autogenous and autogenous mills A simplified picture of the mill load is shown in Figure 8.3 Ad this can be used to establish the essential features of a model for mill power.

Comminution circuits are widely used in nonferrous and precious metals milling. Steel crushers, grinding mills and grinding media are typically used in comminution circuits. Comminution circuit wear products, in the form of metallic iron (steel) fines, are unavoidably produced and report to undersize products in the classification circuit, i.e., flotation or leach …

Ball mills would have dominated comminution conferences little over a decade ago, but they are mentioned only rarely now. This question came up at the very end of today's panel discussion, and I would have liked to have heard more from the panel, who felt that tumbling mills would still play a role, but that they would be more efficient ...
In this example, the OWi of the SAG mill was found to be 30% higher than the ball mill, thus suggesting that the SAG mill was less efficient than the ball mill. The apparent inefficiency of SAG mills when using Bond analysis is widely understood to be due to the difference in the slopes of the size distributions.
Modifications to the SABC comminution circuit included an increase in the SAG mill ball charge from 8% to 10% v / v; an increase in the mill ball charge from 23% v / v to 27% v / v; an increase in the maximum operating power draw in the ball mill to 5800 kW; the replacement of the HP Series pebble crusher with a TC84 crusher; and the addition ...
